The Golden Try - Worth a Try!
The recent NRL coaches conference not only showcased some of rugby league's shrewdest minds, but also pitched an interesting proposal regarding how the NRL currently decides the winner in drawn matches.
Wests Tigers Coach Tim Sheens promoted the idea of scrapping the existing 'Golden Point' rule of determining extra-time matches, in favour of the 'Golden Try' rule. And as the thrilling Tri-Nations Final last Saturday night highlighted, the outcome of an evenly matched, entertaining game should be decided by the team that is able to conjure up a game breaking try - not by the team who possesses superior field kickers.
For the novice rugby league followers out there, the 'Golden Point' rule means that the first team to score any point in an extra-time period, is declared the winner of the game. For example, Tim Sheens' Tigers were involved in three seperate extra time deciders this season, with his side claiming victories through the easiest option - a one point drop goal.
Sheens idea was predominantly supported by most coaches, with North Queensland Cowboys mentor, Graham Murray, declaring that he "does not want to see our game turn into a field-goal-athon."
For the rule to be adopted for season 2007, the proposal must be approved by both the NRL cheif executives at their Annual General Meeting (held this week), and the National Rugby League board of directors.
Should the NRL leave the rule as is, or should they trial the 'Golden Try' proposal?
What are your thoughts?
Cheers,
