A-Z of Australian Rugby League Greats of the past 25 years
Each Tuesday, we will profile an Australian rugby league greats of the past 25 years. The players profiled arent necessarily all representative players, but individuals that have provided their fans with the commitment, dedication and sacrifice for the greater good of their club.
Today and Tomorrow's profile is split between Gary Belcher and Tim Brasher.
Belcher, Gary
Date of Birth
Position Fullback
Nickname Badge
Clubs
Canberra Raiders - 148 matches, 1986-1993, 69 tries 148 goals for 572 points
State of Origin
QLD, 16 matches 1986-93, 4 tries 16 goals for 48 points
International Career
Australia, 15 Tests 1988-91, 3 tries 6 goals for 24 points
One of Queensland's most outstanding custodians, Belcher was a mainstay at the back for the Maroons for seven years. Safe under the high ball, and easily the best defensive fullback of his era, Belcher enjoyed his greatest years between 1988 and 1991.
'Badge' was a member of the back to back Canberra Raiders premiership winning teams in 1989 and 1990, and was also the Maroons fullback throughout their dominant 1988, 1989 and 1990 series whitewashes of the NSW teams.
Belcher's reputation as a solid defensive fullback saw him represent Australia in 15 Tests throughout this period, and only a shocking knee injury prevented him from a longer playing career.
Belcher announced his retirement from the game in 1992 after undergoing a knee reconstruction, but continued his involvement with the game through media work and most recently as a media rep / trainer for the bRisbane Broncos.
