South Sydney today made a bold decision to walk away from Redfern for good - signing a 10 year deal with ANZ Stadium. Formerly Telstra Stadium, the Homebush base is a popular spot for NRL teams without a true suburban home.
The Bulldogs and Wests Tigers have also secured deals with ANZ, but at what cost?
The Stadium is large and offers ample amenities, however it doesn't really offer that cutting edge homeground advantage. Fans are drowned out by the emptiness and viewing isn't ideal due to the long range seating, set back from the field.
Souths had few alternatives, but surely they could have come up with a smarter play than committing to what at times has seemed like a Rugby League Ghost Town?
One things for sure, it must have been extremely attractive financially for Souths to sign up for 10 years. Lets hope the strong results continue for Souths and their long suffering fans continue to get the promise they have seen over the past 18 months.
