They used to be great mates. The mentor and the student, the NRL's dynamic duo - Phil Gould and Ricky Stuart. When Gus Gould gave away coaching at the Roosters, Ricky Stuart was quickly signed from the Bulldogs.
While the Sydney Roosters had a great batch of playing talent at their disposal, the likes of Brad Fittler, Chris Flannery, Craig Wing, Brett Finch, Anthony Minichiello - it was the on-going NRL Results that had everyone talking.
The Roosters rarely lost a game and many felt the direction of Stuart with the teachings of coaching director Gus Gould were the future of the NRL. Suddenly other clubs were employing 'coaching directors' to try and copy the new Roosters formula.
Ricky Stuart won the competition in 2002 and the world was their oyster. But if you listen to Stuart, he will tell you that Gus Gould was jealous and never recovered from seeing Stuart take the team to premiership glory.
Ask Gus and he will tell you that Ricky Stuart is a control freak who overdoes every aspect and forces the issue with his brutal personality.
Either way, the two ex-Roosters men aren't talking and are now taking their Rugby League war to the newspapers - the news limited Daily Telegraph firing Stuart salvo's of course because they all hate Phil Gould over there and Gus using his Sydney Morning Herald vehicle to fire back.
Lets get the gloves on and let the boys sort it out in the ring!
