New Grapple tackle could Break Necks in NRL
February 22nd 2008 01:59
The grapple tackle and then the crusher tackle were major problems during the NRL Rugby League season in 2007. Specifically the Melbourne Storm were targetting the head and neck of attacking players, so they could slow them and win the battle of the play the ball and ruck area.
Fast forward to this year, referees and Rugby League power brokers have now outlawed the grapple and crusher, making them virtually disappear over night. Now it seems some teams are developing new methods, not only with wrestling coaches but will mixed martial arts experts to perform joint locks and pressure holds during the tackle to slow the player down.
I don't know about you, but the thought of someone like Willie Mason or Sonny Bill Williams pulling my leg or arm 180 degrees the other way - scares the hell outta me!
The NRL and COO Graham Annesley are aware of the potential risk and referee boss Robert Finch has been instructed to remain proactive about this possible breach of the rules that could cause serious injury to players and teams in 2008.
