Dragons star Mark Gasnier is apparently in dispute with the Dragons and the NRL over third-party payments to the player, that have yet to be paid out.
The NSW and Australian Centre is owed substantial monies and is set to lose even more if the payouts are not authorized by the NRL through various sponsors such as Channel 9. Dragons CEO Peter Doubst is apparently working with David Gallop from the NRL to ensure the whole situation is sorted out.
Naturally the Dragons don't want to lose the likes of Gasnier who could simply move on to Rugby Union should the situation continue to get worse.
Gasnier has a clause in his NRL / Dragons contract to seek other opportunities should another coach be coming on board and with Wayne Bennett set to take over in 2009 the chance for Gasnier to search elsewhere is a very real possibility.
The St George Illawarra Dragons are already struggling for decent NRL Results, imagine what would happen if someone of Gasniers ability simply walked away?
