Bennett gone as Roberts Bashed
February 5th 2008 10:51
As Wayne Bennett was announcing he was quitting the Broncos at the end of 2008, Bulldog Ben Roberts was recovering from a severe bashing at the Wollongong Niteclub 'The Glasshouse'.
Bennett retires after 21 long years as head of NRL coaching at the Broncos. Possibly moving to Sydney in 2009 for a stint with a club if an opening arises, former NRL mentor Daniel Anderson is also looking to relocate to Sydney in 2009 too.
For Roberts, the bashing has not only nearly cost him his life - he is flirting with the sack at the Bulldogs. The Dogs are in a hot spot after months of turmoil, Roberts adding fuel to the fire with his antics.
Roberts is alleged to have been bashed by bouncers at the Glasshouse after an altercation. Roberts lay limp as teammate Te Marri tried to assist. The pair pressing charges after returning to Wollongong the day after the affair.
The Bulldogs meet the Eels in their opener in 2008 and it's sure to be a cracker after the two met in the finals in 07 in a close one.
